SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS MILITATING AGAINST MANAGEMENT OF COOPERATIVES IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN KADUNA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
The management of every organization is geared toward actualization set objectives, and this is often constrained by certain challenges. This paper examined socio-economic factors militating against management of cooperatives in tertiary institutions in Kaduna state, Nigeria. Stewardship theory guided this research and survey research design adopted. The sample size is 312 registered cooperative members. This was generated from a population of 1,412 registered cooperative members using Taro Yamane (1967) formula. The major instrument of data collection was structured questionnaire. The generated data were analyzed using table of descriptive statistics, frequencies and percentages. The hypothesis was tested using regression analysis through the aid of SPSS. The findings showed that educational qualification and leadership experience are statistically significant at 0.05% level, causing about 81% of the challenges militating against management of the cooperative societies in tertiary institutions in Kaduna state. This paper recommended that since importance of education in the management of any organization cannot be overemphasized, management committee members of a cooperative society should be selected based on specified level of educational acquisition.
