LANGUAGE AND IDEOLOGY IN FANI-KAYODE’S TWEET “CHIMAMANDA’EPISTLE OF GARBAGE”
Abstract
The aim of the study was to expose the ideology predominant in Fani-Kayode’s tweet titled Chimamanda’s Epistle of Garbage. This was done by critically evaluating his speech to determine those ideological strategies hidden in his speech. The research applied Van Djik’s Socio-Cognitive approach to critical discourse analysis in the analysis of the tweet. The researcher adopted a qualitative research method in the analysis of data, and these data were selected using purposive sampling technique. Twitter was used a tool for data collection. The researcher discovered that the predominant ideology in the tweet was Intolerance and this was found through the use of ideological strategies such as actor description, victimisation, negative other presentation, positive other presentation etc. The researcher therefore concluded that his ideology was borne out of the desperation to ensure his party remains in power.
