CONSEQUENCES OF YOUTH CRIMINALITY AND UNEMPLOYMENT (A CASE STUDY OF SOKOTO METROPOLIS)

Ibrahim Yusuf (PhD), Florence Foluso Awosan

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to establish the relationship between the consequences of unemployment and crime; it attempts to see how both variables influence each other or whether the former can actually cause the latter. In the bid to establish this point, two theories were reviewed, namely; the structural functionalism and the conflict theories. The conflict theory suited the objectives of the research more and was adopted. Data was also collected from a sampled survey using the questionnaire and in-depth interview methods; the sample was made up of 200 and only 173 respondents were able fill the data correctly. All these were aimed at achieving the objectives of the study, knowing the relationship between the variables, the level of vulnerability and possible solutions. The hypotheses tested a relationship between unemployment and crime. On the whole, unemployment contributes immensely to the upsurge in crime rate and for crime to be curtailed; unemployment would have to be decisively addressed through a concerted effort of government and the populace.
