KOGI STATE 2015 ELECTION AND THE PRINCE ABUBAKAR AUDU’S DEATH DILEMMA
Abstract
This paper investigates the sudden death of Prince Abubakar Audu, the APC governorship candidate and leading contender in the Kogi State 2015 guber elections. The conflict theory was used as theoretical framework. It analysed the political crises arisen when Prince Audu passed on, especially within the APC and other legal tussles. The paper also observes that the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act are silent on what should be done on the demise of a candidate in an inconclusive election. It further examines the unprecedented act of INEC allowing Yahaya Bello to contest the governorship election without a deputy as well as merging late Audu’s votes with Bello’s supplementary votes to declare him winner of the Kogi governorship elections.
